Michelle Bachmann: Clues That the CIA Doesn't Run the ACLU

Michele Bachmann's mind operates somewhat on the same level as does channel surfing. When flipping channels, you glean a little of this, a bit of that, and can get a small idea of the substance of the programs you're flipping past. This is a good thing when choices are comprised of an Alaskan ex-governor's daughter dancing versus Amateur Chef Smackdown.

Similarly, Bachmann surfs along the surface of life, snagging little bits of kelp while failing to dive into the substance of anything. She gleans a tidbit about any given issue and retains what she needs to back up her anti-choice, anti-worker, pro-nitwit stance of the moment, while discarding the rest as unworthy of her attention -- i.e. letting it sink. This usually works pretty well for her, considering that this shallow knowledge base has been enough to make her a senator and (God help us) a GOP presidential hopeful.

However, sometimes she tries to think something through, and gets tripped up because she didn't watch the whole program -- she surfed past that part in school or briefings or wherever the hell she gets her information. For instance: at November 13th's GOP debate, she said, "Today, under Barack Obama, he is allowing the ACLU to run the CIA."

Somewhere in the murk of her mind, she associates Democrats with the ACLU (doing fine so far). To aid those who might wish to surf further into her towering ignorance, Bachmann then went on NBC's Meet the Press on November 14 and explained (below) that she meant the CIA's "philosophy" is now akin to that of the ACLU's: far too nice, in other words... I think. You be the judge:

GREGORY:  Congresswoman, one more on this.  You say the ACLU is taking over the CIA, run now by General David Petraeus.  You understand...
BACHMANN:  Their philosophy.  Their...
GREGORY:  OK.  You, you...
BACHMANN:  Their philosophy.
GREGORY:  I understand that.  I understand, I understand that's what you mean.
BACHMANN:  Yes, I agree.  I believe, I...
GREGORY:  No, no, let me just make the point.  Your view that waterboarding should be reinstituted, you understand that puts you at odds with most of the generals, OK, the former Republican nominee of your party John McCain, General Colin Powell.  You realize you're on the opposite end of what they believe?  Do you not trust them and their views?

BACHMANN:  Well, but what, but I, but I'm on the same side as Vice President Cheney on this issue, and others as well.  Because, I, again, what we're looking at is what will save American lives.  And that's what the most important thing is.  We've got, we've got to decide that we want to defeat the terrorists.  And when we make that decision, we need to, we need to employ the methods that will best help us to defeat them.  And President Obama is not doing that.  Again, President Obama was given a war that is won in Iraq, and he's choosing to lose the peace.  That's a desecration of the memory of 4400 Americans that gave their lives to liberate Iraq.  And also, it's over $800 billion that we have expended.  I believe that Iraq should pay us back for the money that we spent.  And I believe that Iraq should pay the families that lost a loved one several million dollars per life...."

And there we go into the surf.

Mother Jones does a great job of dissecting Bachmann's crazy comments on the CIA and ACLU. In the meantime, the ACLU had a few clues for Michele (at right) with "Five Clues That the ACLU Doesn't Run the CIA."

Either put down the remote or get a clue, Michele.
